Free Books for your Book Clubs – Act now!

from Craig Popelars, Director of Marketing

Dear Bookseller,

mudbound1

March 17 marks the official publication date of the paperback release of Hillary Jordan’s Mudbound. This is one of those outstanding and original debut novels that Algonquin proudly enjoys introducing to anyone and everyone. While Mudbound was championed by the bookselling community and praised by the media in hardcover, I believe it’s poised to break out in paperback and has national bestseller potential. For this to happen, we really need book clubs to help spread the word, and I can’t imagine a novel that will spark more discussion than this one..

To encourage book club adoptions and intiate a viral book club campaign, Algonquin is doing something a little unorthodox. We’re announcing the following:

Free Copies of Mudbound for 100 Book Clubs Around the Country!

We’re offering 100 bookstores complimentary copies of Mudbound (limit 7 copies per store) to give to a book club that agrees to read it between April 1 and June 30, 2009. The participating book club must agree to share with us, in a brief letter or e-mail, their reading experience and discussion of the novel. If you have a book club that’s interested in participating, please e-mail Lindsey McGuirk ( lindsey@algonquin.com) the following information: Name of store, staff contact, store address and phone, book club contact name and e-mail address, and number of members in the book club. The books will ship directly to the bookstore contacts to share with the selected book club. Requests to participate in this promotion must come directly from the bookstore and not from the book club. Requests to participate must be made by March 30, 2009.

We imagine that after these 100 book clubs discover Mudbound, the word will quickly spread and more book clubs around the country will embrace this award-winning work.

Thanks for everything you did to bring attention to Mudbound in hardcover, and I hope that with your enthusiasm, handselling, and book club adoptions we can build on that early success and make this a bestseller, in paperback, for all of us. Here are some helpful links to share with your staff and book clubs:

Galley Call – Beach Trip

beachtripTo be released May 12, 2009, Beach Trip is the new novel from Cathy Holton.  Four college friends come together at a beach house off the coast of North Carolina.  Though inseparable in college, the quartet, now in their forties, have pursued different paths since they met as freshmen at a small Southern women’s college.

The story is told in chapters alternating between the past and present and between each of the friends.  Sara, who has been married for seventeen years,  doesn’t want to go on the trip and risk a blow-up between her and her one-time best friend, Mel.  Though they grew up together and were roommates at college, underlying emotions are too painful to expose.  Anne Louise, who has every hour of her day planned, is not sure she can manage a week without adherence to her rigid schedule.  She also doesn’t want to get too relaxed and confide her secret to her old roomies.  Mel, who left the South behind and moved to New York the day after graduation, is reluctant to revive all the old memories, which includes a painful break-up with the love of her life.

And, there is Lola, the beautiful and somewhat dim girl-child.  Lola owns the beach house, or rather her rich and controlling husband Briggs owns it.  Lola met Briggs at school, but would not have married him unless her mother had not deemed it the perfect match.  Lola has her secrets, too, and as the beach week unfolds, she may be the smartest one of the group.

This novel is reminiscent of Cassandra King’s The Same Sweet Girls.  But, the ending with its unexpected revelation, will have the reader nodding in complicit delight!

Cathy Holton is the author of Revenge of the Kudzu Debutantes and Secret Lives of the Kudzu Debutantes.  She lives in Chattanooga, TN.  To request a galley copy of Beach Trip while supplies last, please email Kristin Lindstrom at surlywhench@aol.com.

SIBA’s bid for the Innovations in Reading Prize

The Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance has created authorsroundthesouth.com; a free resource for any organization or individual seeking to arrange appearances with writers living or traveling in the south.  The very existence of a search engine for the literary goings on in the south is heartening; for we southerners suffer under a collective myth that we are backward and illiterate.  The purpose of this site, then—and of SIBA itself—is two-fold.  First, it serves to efficiently strengthen the real-time relationship between bookstores, authors, and readers.  It also reminds us that we, as much as everyone else, are connected and enriched by our stories and by books.

Authorsroundthesouth.com has the support of over 200 writers and over 200 bookstores, and is searchable on many levels.  The next phase will involve creating profile pages for southern literary and literacy groups to assist in creating a synergy among all things southern and literary.  Essentially, this site offers a creative wardrobe into the literary Narnia that exists in the south.  SIBA has a deep understanding that reading not only has the power to enrich, enlighten, and enliven all of the people and communities who do it, but that reading is–in and of itself–a somewhat sacred pleasure.  Authorsroundthesouth.com celebrates and adds to this pleasure by giving all manner of book lovers and book writers the opportunity to convene and share their ideas, impressions, and experiences.

Finally, authorsroundthesouth.com furthers SIBA’s core mission: to support and promote independent bookstores that, in turn, support and promote reading in their own diverse communities and beyond. This website is one of the many tools in communicating the importance of reading in our culture, and that indie bookstores are an indispensible part of that culture.  It is at this site the we also promote the Southern Bestseller List, the Lady Banks Commonplace Books: Front Porch Literary Gossip from your favorite Southern Bookshops monthly email newsletterAuthor 2 Author Interviews and much, much more.  SIBA is a non-profit and her resources are limited.  The power of the connections between storytellers and listeners, between bookstores and readers, and between communities committed to and fortified by reading, however, is limitless.  Authorsroundthesouth.com is in the business of providing and solidifying these connections.

Do not read if you were in church this a.m.

This is not meant to be sacrilegious but it is definitely capitalism.  I read alot of stuff looking for the connections to our industry.  And I’m wondering if an Ash Wednesday Window might be eye-catching….

from the Lake City Presbyterian Church Newsletter Feb. 2009

“February 5th is Ash Wednesday and it is always a “wake up call”…..It is a tough day, but take heart!  This is one religious day that won’t fall into the clutches of the retailers.  There aren’t any Hallmark cards celebrating sin and death, no shop windows are decked out with sackcloth and ashes.”                   Reverend Judy Cettei

I Propose a Southern-Wide Bookstore Bed-In

Maybe we could get Sealy or Serta to sponsor it!  We missed the Festival of Sleep Day on Jan. 3 but what about Read A Book Day on Sep. 6 – we can amend it Read a Book in Bed Day.  Or celebrate Duvet Day (see more below). That would be so awesome.

Bookshop Bed-In Promotes Literacy

Jayne Ramage with Alexander McCall Smith

By Alexander Lawrie

A SCOTS book shop owner is urging customers to beat the biting recession and escape the worries of the economy by spending the day in bed with a good book.

Jayne Ramage, 49, staged a 24 hour bed-in yesterday (Fri 23/01) at her shop in Aberfeldy to show how books can help us escape the financial gloom and raise our spirits.

During the unusual exhibition Jayne spent the whole day in bed with a succession of escapist, inspiring and uplifting books.

Her novel day off was complete with cups of tea, biscuits, a cat at the end of the bed, a telephone off the hook, lots of fluffy pillows and a warm duvet and, of course, a pile of books to fill 24 hours.

And the books Jayne picked for the day included The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Castaway, Get the Life You Want and 1000 Ultimate Travel Experiences.

She said: “This is something I try and do three or four times a year myself. I always find reading a chapter a night is never enough so I try and spend the whole day surrounded by everything I need and just read.

“It’s a bit like a ‘duvet day’ but with a bit more planning. I can recommend it to everyone as it is really relaxing.

“There is also a serious side to this though, as I really believe promoting literacy is a welcome idea.

“If the bed-in inspires just one child to pick up a book then it has all been worthwhile. Story-telling is so important and we shouldn’t take it for granted.”

The former primary school head teacher has owned the Watermill book shop with her husband Kevin for the past three years, and the couple were proud to receive the Independent Book Shop of the Year Award 2008 from Alexander McCall Smith last year.

Jayne said: “I’ve been getting lots of comments from customers about being in bed instead of working, but everyone has had a smile on their face when they spot me so it has been well worth it.

“Reading is totally recession proof, and in today’s climate that really is saying something. All I’m hoping people take from this is that picking up a new book, or an old favourite, is a great way of getting away from the stresses and strains of life.”

The couple also help to promote child literacy in the Aberfeldy area by holding free after school book club classes, with up to 50 kids signing up to attend each week.

The John Lennon-style bed-in was also a huge hit with customers at the Watermill bookshop.

Douglas Craig, 61, a retired folk singer, said: “It’s very unusual to see someone in bed when you pop into a book shop, but after a chat with Jayne it all makes so much more sense.

“I think it’s a wonderful idea, as anything that gets people to read more can only be beneficial.

“She’s an inspiration for people to keep on reading, and enjoying, books.

The Watermill is an award-winning bookshop, art gallery, music shop and café, all housed in a restored grade ’A’ listed former watermill building in Aberfeldy, Perthshire

It is the largest bookshop in the rural Highlands, stocking over 10,000 books.

Good Books in Bad Times

HarperOne invites the bookselling community to participate in a new blog called GOOD BOOKS IN BAD TIMES (www.goodbooksinbadtimes.com).

Our goal with this blog is to build a resource by book people, for book people. The idea however isn’t just to promote the HarperOne catalog. We’ve opened it up to submissions from all publishers, booksellers, readers, and librarians. These are tough times and those of us in the book industry have unique insight as to what books are available to help heal, soothe, guide, educate, and escape.

So we invite submissions for GOOD BOOKS IN BAD TIMES. Entries should be brief. We know people are busy and overwhelmed so these really are just short write-ups suggesting books to help readers through today’s difficult times. We would love and welcome bookseller voices as part of this project and when the submission comes from a bookseller we’ll link the book to their store and include an attribution with another link to the store at the end of the entry.  And in order to bring more awareness and traffic to bookstores in general, any contributor can let us know what their favorite bookstore is and we’ll include a link. See examples on the blog now.  With this broad range of voices GOOD BOOKS IN BAD TIMES will continue to grow into a resource of helpful books and ideas to shine a light and offer comfort to readers everywhere.

Submissions should be sent to: goodbooksinbadtimes@yahoo.com
